anyone got the skinny on this? i've seen the teaser a couple days ago and it ends with "3 law safe" i had no idea it's actually based on I, Robot before that but now i just can't wait for it to come out...

Re: I, Robot Movie
Tue, December 30, 2003 - 11:38 AMit's not actually based on the book. unless i read a different book than everyone else. the book is a collection of stories. from what i understand they took bits and pieces of each story to make the movie, so i guess it is actually based on the book to some extent. i found the published screenplay at a local bookstore but decided not to buy it.
when i first saw the teaser i thought it was an iMAC commercial....

Re: I, Robot Movie
Tue, December 30, 2003 - 10:26 PMTitle Note: (1/27/03) The script upon which this film is most directly based was originally titled 'Hardwired', but since that script was inspired by the 9 stories in the 'I, Robot' anthology, 20th Century Fox has gone with that title instead, so that it may be the first in a series of 'Robot' movies based on Asimov's novels, if successful.

Re: I, Robot Movie
Tue, December 30, 2003 - 10:40 PMBased Upon: This film is based upon elements from all nine of the stories in the "I Robot" anthology by Isaac Asimov (1920-1992). This film is not a direct adaptation of any of the nine stories in that book, but is instead a prequel of sorts to them, having its origins in a script by Jeff Vintar that was originally called 'Hardwired' that was adapted to fit into Asimov's stories, but not based on any specific one. It's possible that some of those nine stories, other Asimov robot stories, or one of the four Robot novels that followed 'I, Robot' may someday be produced as a sequel(s) to this film. Those four novels are 'The Caves of Steel' (already in development... at Universal), 'The Naked Sun', 'The Robots of Dawn' and 'Robots and Empire.' -

Re: I, Robot Movie
Wed, December 31, 2003 - 2:57 PMyeah i know a lot of good sci-fi books and stories get completely mangled in the transition to a movie. i still remember the horror of watching johnny mnemonic... talk about a shitty movie.
i think that for a long time sci-fi movies were associated with horror movies and b-movies and other crap like that. hopefully it'll get better now that we've seen stuff like LOTR, x-men, spidermen and the original matrix movie and people understand that you can make a good sci-fi/fantasy movie and still make money off of it. it's probably a fool's hope but i'm a hopeless optimistic :) -

Re: I, Robot Movie
Sat, January 3, 2004 - 8:37 PMI believe that the correct spelling is "i, robot" without capitals (God, I am such a purist!). Praise God for another Asimov-based movie! The Master deserves more attention! -

Re: I, Robot Movie
Sat, January 3, 2004 - 9:05 PMthat may be the case but both imdb and amazon list it capitalized, what's more amazon has a book cover displayed with the name capitalized. never got to see an early printing of it so i really cant say for sure.

Re: I, Robot Movie
Wed, July 21, 2004 - 5:13 PMseen that. looked into some of the articles, seems mostly like crap. also got to see the movie. pretty crappy. got very little to do with the book but at least they recognize that. in the scrollers they said something like "inspired by isaac asimov". at least they got that part right.

Re: I, Robot Movie
Thu, July 22, 2004 - 8:58 AMFrom the trailers I've seen at the theater it really looks like an action shoot 'em up, with Will Smith running around blowing up errant robots while firing off one liners. Personally I'm not expecting much, but hope to be surprised. I'm a lot more famliar with the material of Caves Of Steel through Robots and Empire, its been many years since I've read the shorts in i, robot. However, I don't recall anywhere there being hordes of manic robots running through the city attacking people. Seems like just another "anti-robot" movie where humans "make the mistake" of making robots to do our work, then it all goes awry and the robots kill kill kill. -

Re: I, Robot Movie
Thu, July 22, 2004 - 4:20 PMI think they chose to use I, Robot as the title because of Smith's character's...unique quality. It wasn't a terrible movie, but definitely would not be good in any season but summer. There are a lot of action sequences, and the comedy aspect sometimes appears at the wrong time, as though the film doesn't even take itself seriously. Kind of a weak storyline...they would have been better off following one of Asimov's tales more completely. ;) -

Tue, July 27, 2004 - 5:21 PMI really enjoyed the movie a lot. Very impressed with it... However, it has been 30 years since I read all the Asimov I read, mostly.

Re: I, Robot Movie
Sun, January 22, 2006 - 1:34 PMAs a reader (now writer) for whom 'I, Robot' was my first adult novel many years ago (I still have that book in my collection in fact) I refuse to see this bastardization of his work.
Even more than a year later, I refuse to rent the DVD. -
